Security

To protect your personal data and finances, you need to use all available measures and tools. So, the service offers to connect two-factor authentication (2FA) after registration. It adds another level of security to the account. By connecting 2FA, every time you log in to Poloniex you will have to enter your email, password and a one-time code from a second device, such as a cell phone. The codes are automatically generated and are for one-time use only, expiring after 30-60 seconds. This authentication helps reduce the risk of disclosing personal information, even if the password has been stolen or the email has been hacked.

Activation is available in your personal cabinet after registration. To activate, enter the “2FA” section, save the 16-digit backup key to print it out later. Install the authentication app on your smartphone, as the crypto-exchange does not use SMS verification. You can install:

  • Microsoft Authenticator for Windows Phone.
  • Google Authenticator for iOS or Android.
  • Authy for the desktop.

Log in to your Polonix account and select 2-factor authentication in the top corner under the tool icon. Add the account to the app. You can use a backup key or QR code to do this. The app will generate a password for one-time use in the Polonix account. Go back to the authentication page on the exchange site, enter the password, the code from the app and click “Enable 2FA”.

If the service detects a login from another IP address, it will send a notification to the user’s email address. Such messages with the subject “Successful login from another IP” are sent from [email protected]. There is a link available to block the account, which you can use to stop all activity.

This feature allows you to freeze an account if the user fears it has been compromised. When he clicks the link, he will be redirected to a page where he can confirm the blocking action. In this state of the account, it is possible to access various Poloniex pages, but it is not possible to trade or withdraw funds.

If a user has intentionally blocked an account, they can tell tech support about the account that has been compromised. Sometimes customers accidentally block an account. In such a situation, you can write to the administration to help with the restoration. Also, the Poloniex help center has tips on general account security:

  • Keeping the history of the personal account. Keep an audit of the history, noting key events, including account creation, deposits, transactions, API key creation, withdrawals, and any updates. An accurate history provided to the support team will help speed up the time it takes to resolve problems. Notes should be saved in a safe place, preferably on a device that is not used to access the exchange.
  • Logout when the session ends. It is also worth terminating active sessions on other devices that are not used to access the account.
  • Enabling the API key and disabling each of them if they are discontinued.
